5 Creative Ways to Calm a Chaotic Classroom

October 29, 20255 min read

Welcome to our yearlong series on Classroom Management by Design for Primary Teachers. Each week we will give you a new piece to the classroom management puzzle to have in place when you need it this school year. Think of it as a Lego kit just waiting to be built.

Classroom Management by Design for Primary Teachers:

5 Creative Ways to Calm a Chaotic Classroom (That Actually Work!)

Ever feel like your classroom went from calm to chaos in 3.2 seconds flat?

Before you raise your voice or threaten to call the principal, take a deep breath — there’s another way.

These five creative, brain-based strategies will help you reset the energy in your classroom, re-engage your students, and rebuild calm — without losing your cool or your voice.

🧠 1. Capture Their Imagination (and Redirect the Chaos)

When the room feels like it’s about to erupt, go unexpectedly creative.

Imagination grabs attention faster than any “quiet, please!” ever will.

Try this:

  • Spritz a pretend “Quiet Spray” into the air (just water with a fun label). Tell students its magic helps calm everyone’s brains.

  • Say, “Pop an imaginary marshmallow in your mouth.” Watch as students puff their cheeks and naturally stop talking.

  • Switch gears with a two-minute story reset — turn off the lights, lower your voice, and read a short, engaging paragraph.

✨ Teacher Takeaway: Imagination disarms chaos. When students are curious, they listen — and quiet becomes automatic.

🌬️ 2. Breathe the Calm Back In

A chaotic classroom often needs a nervous system reset — and that starts with breathing.

Here’s how to lead it:

  1. Say, “If you can hear my voice, take a deep breath in.”

  2. Slowly inhale (arms up), exhale (arms down). Repeat three times.

  3. Use the phrase: “Smell a flower… blow out a candle.”

You’ll feel the collective exhale. Even one minute of mindful breathing lowers stress and brings oxygen back to those overactive little brains.

✨ Teacher Takeaway: Calm isn’t quiet — it’s regulated energy. Breathing helps your students find that balance.

🏃‍♀️ 3. Move It Out to Calm It Down

Sometimes chaos means kids just have too much energy to sit still. You can’t control energy — but you can channel it.

Try one of these micro movement resets:

  • Shake & Freeze: Play 30 seconds of music. Students wiggle, then freeze on cue.

  • Silent Simon Says: You silently model actions — students copy without sound.

  • Chair Yoga: Reach, stretch, twist, and breathe together for one minute.

After a movement burst, the class is more focused for 20+ minutes of learning.

✨ Teacher Takeaway: You’re not “losing time.” You’re investing in 20 calm minutes of focus that follow.

💬 4. Model Calm and Co-Regulate

When your students spiral, they borrow your energy.

That means the fastest way to calm them… is to calm yourself.

Speak softly. Slow your movements. Say what you notice:

“It looks like we’re all a little excited right now. Let’s pause for a reset.”

Add emotional check-ins:

  • Quick “How are you feeling?” rounds.

  • A “Calm Corner” with fidgets, soft lighting, or coloring sheets.

  • One-minute journal reflection or breathing station.

✨ Teacher Takeaway: You’re the thermostat, not the thermometer. When you stay steady, the whole room follows your lead.

🎮 5. Gamify Calm

Turn calming down into a game and watch your class rise to the challenge.

Try one of these crowd-favorites:

  • Call and Response: You say, “Hocus Pocus!” They reply, “Everybody Focus!”

  • Quiet Challenge: “Let’s see if we can all be silent and seated in 15 seconds — ready, set, go!”

  • Rhythm Match: Clap a fun pattern; students copy and end in silence.

Make it fun, not forced — and they’ll look forward to your “calm games.”

✨ Teacher Takeaway: Gamified calm builds student ownership. They want to win — and the reward is a peaceful class.

🌟 Final Thoughts: Calm is Contagious

A chaotic classroom doesn’t mean you’ve lost control — it means the room needs direction, safety, and connection.

Your energy sets the tone. When you bring creativity, movement, and mindful structure, your students will meet you there.

So the next time the noise rises, pause, smile, and think: “I’ve got five creative tools ready to go.”

Manage Student Behavior in 5 Minutes a Day!

Do you see student behavior going through the roof right about now?

Have you tried EVERYTHING and NOTHING seems to work?

Trust me, I've been there!

This is EXACTLY why I created The Student Behavior Scenario of the Day Cards for primary teachers. You will improve student behavior AND your classroom management in just 5 minutes a day!

As teachers, we can't assume that students know how to behave or what is expected of them and so often that is where things go wrong for us. (We all know what happens when we ''assume", but yet we still do it anyway.)

These cards changed EVERYTHING for me in the primary classroom because students LOVE talking about behavior AND they want to meet your expectations.

Best of all, each card has scenario of the day, reflection questions, and possible consequences that teachers can use in each situation.

Mastering Classroom Management for Primary Teachers

Lauren Zbiegien has had a passion for teaching since a very early age. She always knew she wanted to be a teacher and eventually felt the call to do more for education.

After 20+ years of education experience, the bulk of those years being spent in the classroom, Lauren's biggest accomplishments are receiving her Master's Degree in educational technology, becoming a State of Ohio Master Teacher, and leading her school to receive the Ohio Lottery's Academic All-Star School of the Year.

Lauren's strength in classroom management led to her being asked to take on the role of assistant principal in a PreK-8 building. During this time she knew she wanted to connect with teachers to be sure that their needs were being met, so she created a "10 Minute Check-In Time" with each teacher on a weekly basis that they could utilize as they wished.

Helping teachers navigate their classroom management styles and methods quickly became Lauren's favorite part of being an assistant principal. This led her to pursue options on how she could share her classroom management talents with more teachers.

Lauren is now the owner and operator of Lesson Plan Toolbox, LLC where she helps primary teachers master classroom management using a one-of-a-kind monthly, weekly, and daily method of support that can all be done during teacher contract hours.

Classroom management is the MOST important skill to master for primary teachers. Lauren's passion for supporting primary teachers comes from her classroom experience and research on how critical the ages of 0-8 years old are in child development.

If you are a superintendent, school administrator, or a teacher working with primary students and are interested in year-round classroom management support that happens in real-time, then the Mastering Classroom Management for Primary Teachers Membership is EXACTLY what you need.
