Should I Use Candy As A Reward in a K-3 Classroom?

July 30, 20255 min read

🍬 Should You Use Candy as a Reward in Your K–3 Classroom?

Using food or candy as a reward in the classroom is something almost every K–3 teacher has tried at least once. But is it the best choice for managing student behavior long term?

Let’s break it down — and explore alternatives that actually work.

🎯 The Real Reason Teachers Reach for Candy

Picture this: It’s 2:15, your class is bouncing off the walls, and you’re desperate for focus. The quickest option? Grab that bag of candy and offer a treat for quiet behavior.

It feels like a win... until the sugar wears off, the asking-for-more starts, and behavior dips again.

Sound familiar?

This moment is why many teachers start questioning the role of candy or food rewards in their classroom management plan.

📊 What the Research Says About Food Rewards in the Classroom

Research shows that rewarding behavior with food, especially sugary treats, can have some unintended consequences:

- It builds a transactional mindset: “If I do this, what do I get?”
- It reinforces external motivation over internal regulation.
- It creates sugar highs followed by focus crashes.
- It may exclude students with allergies or dietary restrictions.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends avoiding food rewards for these reasons and instead promoting healthier, more inclusive classroom motivators.

🚫 Why Candy Rewards Stop Working Over Time

While candy might help in the short term, over time it can lead to:
- Increased dependency: Students wait for a treat before they cooperate.
- Inequity: Not all students are eligible or allowed to have food-based treats.
- Undermined routines: Students learn to behave only when there's a tangible payoff.

This isn't the classroom culture you're working so hard to build.

✅ What to Use Instead of Candy: 5 Teacher-Approved Rewards

There are plenty of non-food reward alternatives that are simple, effective, and promote a calm classroom culture.

Here are 5 you can try this week:

1. 🎉 Surprise Day Activities

Let students vote for an unexpected treat like:
- Freeze dance
- Draw and talk time
- Mystery read-aloud
- Inside-out day (switch roles for 10 minutes)

2. 🪑 Mini Classroom Privileges

Make rewards feel special — not sugary:
- Sit in the teacher’s chair
- Choose the next brain break
- Lead the line or morning greeting

3. 🌟 Recognition Moments

Use a shout-out wall, celebration chair, or sticky notes of praise. Kids crave connection — even more than candy.

4. 🎭 Behavior Scenario Card Moments

Feature a student’s real moment of growth using your Student Behavior Scenario of the Day cards. Reinforce the why behind their positive behavior.

5. 📬 Calm Leader of the Day

Spotlight a student who stayed regulated or showed kindness. Let them help run a part of the day.

💡 Teacher Reflection: What If They Don’t Need Candy?

When I finally stopped using candy, I was nervous.
Would my students stop trying?
Would my classroom become chaos?

What actually happened?
Behavior improved.
Students stopped asking, “Do I get a treat?” and started asking, “Can I be the helper next time?”

Trust that your students are capable of rising without sugar.

💬 Let’s stop bribing and start building behavior that lasts.

Manage Student Behavior in 5 Minutes a Day!

Do you see student behavior going through the roof right about now?

Have you tried EVERYTHING and NOTHING seems to work?

Trust me, I've been there!

This is EXACTLY why I created The Student Behavior Scenario of the Day Cards for primary teachers. You will improve student behavior AND your classroom management in just 5 minutes a day!

As teachers, we can't assume that students know how to behave or what is expected of them and so often that is where things go wrong for us. (We all know what happens when we ''assume", but yet we still do it anyway.)

These cards changed EVERYTHING for me in the primary classroom because students LOVE talking about behavior AND they want to meet your expectations.

Best of all, each card has scenario of the day, reflection questions, and possible consequences that teachers can use in each situation.

Mastering Classroom Management for Primary Teachers

Lauren Zbiegien has had a passion for teaching since a very early age. She always knew she wanted to be a teacher and eventually felt the call to do more for education.

After 20+ years of education experience, the bulk of those years being spent in the classroom, Lauren's biggest accomplishments are receiving her Master's Degree in educational technology, becoming a State of Ohio Master Teacher, and leading her school to receive the Ohio Lottery's Academic All-Star School of the Year.

Lauren's strength in classroom management led to her being asked to take on the role of assistant principal in a PreK-8 building. During this time she knew she wanted to connect with teachers to be sure that their needs were being met, so she created a "10 Minute Check-In Time" with each teacher on a weekly basis that they could utilize as they wished.

Helping teachers navigate their classroom management styles and methods quickly became Lauren's favorite part of being an assistant principal. This led her to pursue options on how she could share her classroom management talents with more teachers.

Lauren is now the owner and operator of Lesson Plan Toolbox, LLC where she helps primary teachers master classroom management using a one-of-a-kind monthly, weekly, and daily method of support that can all be done during teacher contract hours.

Classroom management is the MOST important skill to master for primary teachers. Lauren's passion for supporting primary teachers comes from her classroom experience and research on how critical the ages of 0-8 years old are in child development.

If you are a superintendent, school administrator, or a teacher working with primary students and are interested in year-round classroom management support that happens in real-time, then the Mastering Classroom Management for Primary Teachers Membership is EXACTLY what you need.
